Contemporary Sword Fusion
The sword dance is traditionally used as part of an oriental dance show to display the dancer’s strength and skill and to convey a feeling of power and drama.
The narrative element of the prop lends itself beautifully to fusion. Mariyah will teach a fusion sword choreography featuring innovative ways of utilizing the sword in your dance. This workshop will invoke elements of the classic and timeless oriental dance performance while harnessing the innate power and grace of the sword itself for a martial feeling and dramatic approach. Technique emphasis will be on ways to use the sword creatively as well as balancing and exercises for fluid and strong floorwork for an effortless and dynamic performance.

Ruby returns to NYC for an exciting Workshop!
SWIFTI CHIFTI
Get your Turkish style on with some fun, upbeat Chiftetelli combos and rhythm breakdown. We’ll be breaking down the chiftetelli rhythm then exploring how to dance to it upbeat style with different props and a little bit of structured improvisation. Bring zills (optional for more advanced dancers) and Chiffon veil.
About Ruby-
With a background in American Classic Bellydance, Kung Fu and Turkish Oriental styling, Ruby is taking the stage with her own powerhouse style. Ruby’s love of Turkish culture and dance have drawn her to head straight for the source and study extensively in Istanbul. She is widely recognized for a raw and passionate dance style that has won numerous titles including 2010 Bellydancer of the World 1st runner up, 2009 Bellydancer USA and 2008 East Coast Bellydance Classic Grand Champion.
In addition to being a multi-award winning performer, Ruby is a certified Pilates instructor and is featured on several instructional and performance bellydance DVDs including her own full length instructionals: “Flawless Floorwork” and “Totally Turkish”. Ruby currently travels worldwide bringing her energetic and joyful style to workshops and performances around the globe. When she is not traveling, she resides in Las Vegas, Nevada where she teaches weekly classes and private lessons.

Mariyah is an acclaimed professional bellydance artist, performer and instructor based in New York City known for her elegant, distinctive and soulful interpretations of Oriental dance. Mariyah has earned awards from respected dance competitions, taught workshops across the US abroad and has performed countless shows in nightclubs, private events, theater and concert stages. Her professionalism, skill and graceful, engaging presence have made her a highly sought after entertainer, solo artist, and company member. Mariyah has been an active member of the Dalia Carella Dance Collective since 2001, classical Arabic music and dance ensemble, Zikrayat since 2009 and has most recently joined NYC’s Bellyqueen dance company.
Layla Isis is a leading, professional bellydancer based in New York City. She has performed in theaters, concert halls, nightclubs and event spaces in the region and around the world as a highly sought after solo dance artist and troupe member and has also appeared in films, television and music videos. Her dancing style has been called “sophisticated and elegant,” known for her dynamic hip work, powerful shimmies, and expressive, vibrant performances. Layla is an active member of The Dalia Carella Dance Collective, and the classical Arabic music and dance ensemble Zikrayat. She also worked for many years under the tutelage of Jehan Kamal in her company Goddessdance, and school, The Temple of Jehan. Additional highlights include: The Bellydance Superstars, Temptation of Bellydance DVD, Sex and The City 2, and Late Night with Conan O’Brian.
