Saturday Classes in Brooklyn
Summer Classes at Shambhala begin Saturday, May 30th at a new time.
Shambhala summer classes will be moved to an earlier time for the summer so you can get your dance class in and get out to enjoy the summer sun!
Saturdays 12:30-1:45pm at Shambhala’s Dean St. location.
1000 Dean St. Brooklyn NY(Just 3 blocks from the St. Marks studio
Classes are beginner/open level focusing on strong movement technique. Some work with veil and finger cymbals will be introduced
6 weeks (5/30-7/11, no class July 4th) $72 or drop-in class $16

Bellydance Classics: Floorwork and Balancing Class Series

An essential part of a classic belly dance show, floorwork is graceful and sensual and can also be a showcase for the dancer’s strength, flexibility and balancing skill.
In these classes we will cover fluid undulations and abdominal isolations and the elements of creating a stunning floorwork routine.
-classic floorwork movements and poses
-core and leg strength
-flexibility and working into backbends
-working with a balancing prop (5/11 & 5/18)
-costuming and appropriate venues
-modifications of advanced movements
You may want to bring:
– knee pads
– socks or leg warmers (to pad the tops of feet)
– a yoga mat or towel
– for 5/11 and 5/18, please bring your prop of choice or any object you can balance.

Dunyavi Roma Dance with Dupatta
Friday, November 15, 1-3:30pm – Dalia Carella
This class focuses on Dalia’s Vintage Dunyavi Roma Style utilizing hand gesturing from India and the Arab World and dancing with a Dupatta (Indian head veil). Haunting Taxsims (music without rhythm) will be used during this class to accentuate the movements used with the Dupatta to create a dramatic opening or entrance that Dalia created in her world renowned signature style. You can use this style of dance both in Roma and Orientale dance. (If you do not have a Dupatta, bring a regular veil and also bring bobby pins).

Making friends with Floor(work) – Friday, November 15, 4-5:30pm – Mariyah
This workshop will cover the basics of graceful descents and ascents, classic Oriental dance floor movements and move toward an exploration of dancing and creating movement at different levels. Floorwork using a veil or balancing prop will also be addressed, time permitting.

Dalia and Mariyah are thrilled to present this hands on workshop with renowned drummer Rami El Aasser! This workshop is specially designed to cover must-know Middle Eastern rhythms, show-stopping shimmy drills and percussive movements, learn many dynamic tools of the trade that both Dalia and Mariyah have used in their drum solo performances that can help a dancer to communicate with a drummer throughout the performance and leave an everlasting impression on an audience.

This class will focus on Dance Concepts used in this fusion style that Dalia has created since the late 70s. Skirt and Arm Technique will be taught and drills to strengthen and open the upper body to enhance the beautiful Spanish and Arabic arms used in this romantic dance style. Foot Patterns will be explored as well. Bring a full style ankle length skirt without slits (Roma or Oriental Dance Style).

Danse Orientale – How to Seduce an Audience – Sunday, November 17, 11-1:30pm – Dalia Carella
This class will focus on combos turning into a short choreography to specifically teach the dancer how to create a stunning, sultry performance. We will work on how a dancer ”becomes one with the music”, and learns how to ignite an audience with his/her artistic and sensual performance.

Earthy and Ethereal – Sunday, November 17, 2:30-5:00pm – Mariyah

Veil work is one of the most ethereal, magical and sensuous aspects of Bellydance. Join Mariyah, known for her signature romantic and expressive veil style, to learn not only manipulations of fabric but also techniques and dimensions to use the veil as true extension of your dance. Combinations taught will express an array of moods and possibilities for dancing with the veil.

Contemporary Sword Fusion
The sword dance is traditionally used as part of an oriental dance show to display the dancer’s strength and skill and to convey a feeling of power and drama.
The narrative element of the prop lends itself beautifully to fusion. Mariyah will teach a fusion sword choreography featuring innovative ways of utilizing the sword in your dance. This workshop will invoke elements of the classic and timeless oriental dance performance while harnessing the innate power and grace of the sword itself for a martial feeling and dramatic approach. Technique emphasis will be on ways to use the sword creatively as well as balancing and exercises for fluid and strong floorwork for an effortless and dynamic performance.
