Hiring a Bellydancer – Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the show? What can I expect to see?
A typical, classic bellydance show is about 20-25 minutes. This length of show is by far the most popular and appropriate for most parties. However, for some, smaller events a 10-15 minute set may be best. If your event is very large, a slightly longer show or additional sets may be arranged at an added cost. A classic performance typically begins with upbeat entrance piece using finger cymbals and wings or veil, a dance of balancing skill using sword or candle tray, interaction and dancing with the guest of honor and audience, and an exciting drum solo finale. (drum solo is recorded, though hiring a live drummer as an addition to the show is fantastic and highly recommended!)

Do you bring your own music?
The dancer will provide a set of music on CD or ipod. The sound system should be provided by the client. For larger events which include a DJ, the dancer can speak to the DJ before the event to determine the best way to bring the music and send tracks ahead if needed. If requested the dancer may bring a sound system (Bose ipod dock)suitable for smaller event for an added fee. Live music or drumming can also be arranged on request.

What kind of music do you dance to?
Mariyah always arranges the set music to the specifications of your event. The set may include traditional Arabic or Turkish music or modern pop. In addition, Greek, Persian or Bollywood songs may be included on request. Specific song requests for the audience participation portion of the show are always possible if given to the dancer ahead of time.

What sort of events typically hire Bellydancers?
While birthday parties and weddings are some of the most popular occasions, bellydancers perform at all types of festive events including: grand openings, anniversaries, engagements, retirements, corporate events, galas, nightclubs, cultural events, schools and children’s parties. The style of the show and costuming can always be adjusted to best meet the needs of a particular event

There will be children at the event, is the show appropriate?
Absolutely! Children are often some of the dancers biggest fans! The show is entirely family friendly and appropriate and fun for all ages.

Is it alright to tip the dancer?
Tipping is never required but it is a traditional and much appreciated gesture. Unless the host has requested otherwise, the dancer will accept tips. Tips may be thrown above the dancer’s head as a “money shower”, tucked into the armbands of her costume, or simply handed to her. A tip can also be included with the balance payment given after the performance.

Will the dancer dance with guests?
I want to put the guest of honor out in the middle of the dance floor so she can dance with/for him.

The first 2 songs of the bellydance show are the performance time. This is the time where all of your guests can see the beauty and skill of the entertainer you hired. This is also where you will see various props (if requested) such as wings, candles or sword. Audience participation is a very important and memorable aspect of the show and rest assured plenty of time for it will be included once the the dancer has wowed your guests with the initial performance segment of the show.Remember the dancer is there to make an impression on the entire room. Please do not put the guest of honor in the middle of the floor! However it is fine to seat the guest of honor at the front. The dancer will be sure that he or she is the first guest invited up to dance!

What about a group of belly dancers? Is a show with one dancer enough?
A bellydance duet or group show is 2 or 3 times the fun! Mariyah and Infinity Bellydance can bring you a show with beautiful dancers in stunning group choreographies. However not every event is suited to a group show. The scale of your event, the dance space and your budget are all things to consider. While a group show is an excellent option, especially for grand events or large audiences, a solo dancer can also effectively captivate a crowd and may be a better choice for some clients.

How far in advance should I make the booking?
It is always better to book the show sooner than later. If you are flexible about the time that the show begins, last minute shows can often be worked in. However, Saturday nights fill up quickly, especially during the summer and holidays, so it is best to book 2-4 weeks in advance.

How much does the show cost?
Rates for a show at most parties in the NYC area start at $250 per dancer. For larger events such as weddings large corporate events and some parties typically start at $325. This is because the dancer will devote more time in these cases to to discussing details with the client, event planner and DJ leading up to the event, arrive earlier and allow more time to be at the venue in case of any delays. If your event is outside of NYC additional charges may apply for travel depending on the distance.
